.. have been great for us. we have had the best response with shows and would like to thank everyone whos been along!! Its gonna get better..

MAY 20TH

La Roq Sportif, La Bete, Keith Brown and Scumbag Philosopher - this show really opened my eyes to the impact such a show can put on people, the turnout was remarkable, and i saw so many faces i’ve not seen since i was in Violet Violet. It was lovely to think people wanted to see the bands we were putting on and that our name was out there. The Crypt was packed, and it secured us as a reliable booking to the people at Bedfords.

ACOUSTIC NIGHTS AT OLIVES

We’ve now had 3 acoustic evenings at Olives, and Jason has secured the night as a monthly occurance, every first thursday. The next one will be on 4th of August, so acoustic artists get in touch with Jason on handshakes@hotmail.co.uk if you want a slot!

the newest band on the bill, and definitely ones to watch, NPB are due to record their new release at Leeders Farm, owned by Dan Hawkins of the Darkness/Stone Gods fame, and boasting a clientelle of many local bands such as Fever Fever, Sargasso Trio, Violet Violet and The Brownies, as well as Frank Turner, Nick Cave and Arctic Monkeys.

To all our lovely supporters!

We’ve had a great start, with two awesome, packed, brilliant brilliant brilliant shows. the launch night was incredible;

the bands (solidgoes, electric youth revolt, mymidons and death rattle) all exceeded expectations, and the crowd was amazing, so thanks to each and every one of you for making our launch a success.

A few weeks later we hosted our first acoustic evening at Olives, with Jason stepping up to the stage, supported by the likes of Luke Palmer, a stripped down (and not in the clothing sense) Myrmidons and solo newcomer Jackson White. We were so happy to have another packed venue and to have so much audience input, and are even happier to announce that we now have the venue for future acoustic nights on every first thursday of the month.

In the near future we have the following shows;

MAY 20TH - this show is in association with the Fringe Festival, and is a very exciting one for us, and for me (Kylie), personally, because i get to put on some bands and people that have been with me since i first started playing with Violet Violet, although their surroundings may have changed somewhat; Scumbag Philosopher (my former NRONE stablemates, previously known as Fuck Dress, or Bonk Frock if you read the media), Keith Brown (of the wonderful Tape Invaders, and my visor, now fronting his own DIY Rock outfit), La Roq Sportif (garage frock and roll from The Deets’ multi-tasker Jason), and La Bete (London based quartet featuring our very own Norwich lass Naomi, formerly of UhOhs and Pistolas, to name but a few). The gig is being held at The Crypt beneath Bedfords on May 20th, doors are £3 and open at 7.30pm. The first band is on nearer 8, so get their early!

JUNE 2ND - our second acoustic night will see the debut of Terence of Thee O Adorno as a solo artist in his own right, under the name of Death Rides A Goat. There will also be an acoustic skit from Rabbit Years, Ruby Nectar and, because we loved him so much the first time, Jackson White. Free entry and starts at 730, no excuses guys!

July will also bring another incredible lineup, but i’m gonna keep tight lipped on that until i can confirm it :)

So, What is it all about?

Eh up! Jason here. I haven’t posted anything on this blog yet, so I thought I’d write a little bit about what I want handshakes promotions to be.

I remember when I was about 15, my older brother had just started doing gigs with his first band “The Starfish”. They’d play a lot of different venues around Norwich, The Marquee, The King Edward, The Catherine Wheel, The Ferryboat (RIP) and every show seemed to have such a different energy to the ones I go to now. It may of been because I was young and the whole thing was new to me, but I think something changed in the Norwich music scene.

I blame the death of The Ferryboat for a lot of that. It was an amazing place to hang out, and the perfect place for local bands to play. There was just something brilliant about it. It felt like when it closed something changed.

When my brothers band played, they would play with a bunch of different bands, they’d become friends, start doing gigs together, their fans would hear both bands and another band would come along. Rinse and repeat. Before you knew it, fans of the other bands would start to show up at Starfish gigs and vice versa, even if their friends bands weren’t playing. There was a real community to it. Ironically this was before social networking websites had even taken off.

Kylie picked the name “Handshakes Promotions” but I can’t think of anything which fits better with what I hope we can achieve.

I want like minded bands to meet. I want their fans to meet. I want them to start playing shows together and for those communities to form again. I want new bands to have a good chance at playing at a good venue with well established bands, and for them to get their own fan base quickly.

So far we have heard from loads of bands who are looking for gigs, and I can’t wait to get them all playing and meeting other bands they can work with to put on their own shows.

Too often I go to gigs, and as soon as a band is finished, they pack up, leave and take their friends with them. The crowd dies down and by the time the head liner gets to the stage, they are playing to a room of their own friends. Its always fun to play for your friends, but what is the point unless you are reaching new people?

If you are the kind of band that plans to do this, you need not apply, and if you do apply, we won’t book you twice. Obviously not everyone can always stay to the end of a show, but its so important that you support the bands you are playing with, and ask your fans to do the same. You never know, you might hear something you like and get some gigs out of it.

I am going to be printing and handing out fliers at each gig, with the bands who played listed. It will include their websites, facebook pages and myspace addresses. If you like the band, when you get home, like them on facebook, friend them on myspace, and check out more of their shows if you can get to them.

We can put on as many gigs as we like, but its you people, the bands, the fans and the venues which makes the whole thing worth while. We don’t want to make any money out of this. We want Norwich to be THE place to play, and if we find some awesome new bands to listen to on the way, then thats just gravy.

hey! we are currently planning our first show, which should hopefully be on the agenda for february. if you know of any bands looking for shows, get in touch, likewise if you are an artist yourself.

i’m trying to get (back) to grips with myspace.
